“Websites in Motion”
Designing Websites for the Mobile Web
General Statistics About Gen-Y
- 79.8 million members; Fastest growing demographic in the US Workforce
- Formative Events: Baby Boomer Parents (how many of you have kids in this range), Internet, Mobile Technology and 9/11
- Currently there are 1.2 billion mobile web users and it is projected (Juniper Research) that the number will grow to 2.4 billion by 2014
The Truth about “Smart Phones”
- They have tiny screens.
- Limited bandwidth
- Limited navigation
- Users have to pay for the bandwidth (so, the larger the site the more bandwidth it takes to download & search onto your “smart phone”
This had a profound impact on me when I needed to purchase a product from an electronics company. I searched 3 companies on my Blackberry Curve and only 1 was “Mobile Friendly” I’m sure you can guess who I wanted to purchase the product from (The company that didn’t frustrate me during my mobile web experience.
So How Should My Site Be Designed?
Minimalism is essential (the smaller & simpler the better) so your developer needs to have tools & techniques for optimal mobile web design. So, to simplify your mobile design follow these steps:
- Streamline the menu system
- Reduce or eliminate graphics, especially those used in navigation
- Scale back text and break it up over multiple pages
- Eliminate Flash & JavaScript – design exclusively in plain HTML and XHTML using CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)
- Avoid pop-ups (they are unpredictable on mobile platforms
- Think small – Mobile phone screens sizes vary from 320 x 480 down to 128 x 160 pixels
Big Ticket Items
- Use a mobile theme – In your content management system (CMS) use one set of CSSes for your mobile theme and a separate set for your mobile website. Basically there is software that developers can plug into your site so it will detect when a mobile browser is accessing the site and it will automatically choose the simple CSS to display the site.
- Design to scroll vertically – Limit your page width.
- Facilitate touch screen navigation – Make options larger & increase “clickable space around them”.
- Maintain consistency with your main website – It should have a familiar appearance, color scheme, overall brand and recognizable links.
Why is all of this important? Marketing & advertising has changed and consumers are telling companies how they want to be marketed and sold to. If we as Entrepreneurs don’t listen to our clients and prospects and respond accordingly, eventually we will be out of business.
Kudos to Entrepreneur Magazine & Mikal E. Belicove for the insight!
15% Changes Everything
Recently I read a post from Seth Godin that stated…
“When a newspaper loses 15% of its readers or 15% of its advertisers, it goes out of business. There are still people who want to read it, still people who want to advertise, but it’s gone.
When a technology company increases its sales by 15%, profits will double. The sales line doesn’t have to increase that much for profits to soar.
It’s so tempting to head for green fields with a new thing, a new market, a new business. But in fact, 15% right here and right now might be exactly what you need.”
I concur with his assessment. Often times new entrepreneurs fail to take the time to work on their business because they are so busy working in it. Take 15% of your work hours this week and dedicate that time to the development of your business. Make sure you get away for the office, the smart phone and of course the iPad and focus on the areas of your company that need improvement and what the strategy will be to go to that next level of operations. If you commit the time, I promise you will be amazed by the results!
Rules for Business Success – Part 2
This post is a continuation of the Rules for Business Success which was inspired after a visit with a prospect who is very big on Networking and through the course of our conversation he shared some great tips which I’d like to pass on to all of you entrepreneurs working hard to grow your businesses. Here are the other 5 key points:
- Think positive thoughts daily.
- This is very important because “you are what you think”. Often times when you do not feel your best or don’t feel that great about a project you may be involved with it tends to show on your face. These thoughts will manifest themselves in our work performance, behaviors and how we treat others, so keep the thoughts positive.
- Reading and listening to inspirational, edifying materials is definitely the route to take when trying to remain focused on thinking positive.
- Surround yourself with successful people.
- I am a huge fan of mentors, coaches and accountability groups. In these environments you will be inspired, encouraged and sometimes kicked in the butt to keep moving forward and advancing towards your goals.
- Without this influence and accountability we would not have the capacity to push ourselves past some of the glass ceilings we hit on the path of entrepreneurship.
- Form strategic alliances with other companies or individuals.
- This is HUGE! When we did this as a company things changed immediately. We were perceived larger, more professional and as a comprehensive solution for our clients.
- These alliances really help with focusing your strength in the areas of your core competencies or “sweet spot”.
- Create and use systems in your business.
- Why is this important? For growing companies. Entrepreneurs that successfully grow companies beyond their capacity understand that if they can create a system, then someone else can be trained to follow it so that there can be continued growth and advancement.
- This process also helps with clearly defining job descriptions and what staff will be needed to help advance and grow the company.
- Do what you do best and outsource everything else.
- Outsourcing doesn’t necessarily mean getting a bunch of contractors but it may be employees, interns, contractors etc. Basically you need to keep your focus on your sweet spot and working on your business not in it!
I hope these tips were helpful for you. Please let us know by dropping us a comment today. Take care!
Rules for Business Success!
Recently I had an opportunity to visit with a prospect who is very big on Networking and through the course of our conversation he shared some great tips which I’d like to pass on to all of you entrepreneurs working hard to grow your businesses.
- Work on your business not in your business.
- This has been an ongoing process for me because there is always the need to acquire new business and as we have grown I have released responsibilities to those that are well able. The key for success in this area is first prayer & seeking Godly wisdom. Secondly, I hired contractors for different aspects of the company and we developed long term relationships. I was able to expand the team on a per project basis without committing to full time salaries initially.
- Set goals for everything.
- This is so true. If it is not a written goal or action item for me, it WILL NOT get done.
- Network! Network! Network!
- Be careful with this one and make sure you are working and not socializing. I’ve seen how networking can eat up a lot of time and not yield any results.
- Networking should produce referrals and work for your company. BNI, a business referral and networking organization has a philosophy; “Givers Gain” which basically means networking shouldn’t just be beneficial to you it should be benefit those you are networking with as well. So commit to being a blessing to others and they will definitely be a blessing to you.
- In the future I will share more about Strategic Alliances and how they help your business grow exponentially.
- Begin your day by acknowledging God.
- This is so important for me as a Christian business owner because the Bible explains that God will direct my paths when I acknowledge Him first (Proverbs 3:5-6). In my industry things are always changing and it can be hard to keep up at times but by acknowledging God I receive insights and wisdom that actually keeps me ahead of the game. That wisdom also helps me with the strategies we develop for our clients. How sweet is that divine intervention on projects!
- Exercise and maintain a healthy diet.
- My father passed away in October of 1979 right before my 9th birthday. He was a very successful entrepreneur grossing well over $600,000/yr in the 70′s. The sad thing is when he died he was only 47 years old (or should I say 47 years young). He was overweight had high blood pressure and the list goes on, basically he didn’t take care of himself. He took great care of us (his family), the business and his spiritual life but he failed to take better care of himself.
- If you are like me you want to live a long time, see your kids grow up, get married and have children of their own. To do this make the commitment to allot time to take care of your health.
There are 5 more that I will share with you later. Please comment and let our followers know some of your rules for success!
“How to write good content.”
My partner Stan Abiassi & I attended an E-Mail Marketing Workshop conducted by Constant Contact and I must admit it was very insightful. We have been utilizing the tool for a few years now and have had some good success but now that we have learned a few more “tricks of the trade” we are looking to produce some “More Excellent” Email Marketing Campaigns. Click here to see one of the most recent email blasts we developed which links to a video and landing page which we produced as well (let us know your thoughts about it).
Enough about that, one of the things we learned about is how to write GOOD content for your email campaigns. I don’t know about you but this is the thing that has kept me from doing email marketing campaigns on a more frequent basis. Well now that I have these power points that won’t be the case anymore. So without further ado here are the 4 keys to writing good content for email marketing campaigns:
- Find out what interests your customers.
- Note your customers most commonly asked questions and discuss them in your campaigns, allow their questions to be talk points and focus.
- Keep your content short and to the point.
- Use hyperlinks to your website or blog for longer articles or stories.
- Ask for feedback.
- Client feedback is extremely valuable and when they see changes in your articles as a result of the feedback they have given, you will have business advocates for life!
- Incorporate content from other sources.
- This was the epiphany for me. There are many FREE resources available to you that are just a GOOGLE away! Please be sure to ask for permission or check to make sure it is permission based content. Add your own commentary to it and add links to the author’s website.
So to practice what I just preached please check out Constant Contact to learn more tips about Email Marketing. Take care!

“If you build it will they come?”
Is your internet marketing campaign funneling customers to you, or is it just sending money to a web company? We have all heard it said “If you build it, they will come”; well in this new and ever-changing age of technology that just isn’t the case anymore – especially for websites.
At BUILDINGBLOCKS Media Group, LLC we believe that you need solid metrics in place to accurately measure the return on your marketing dollars, so all of our Internet Marketing programs are built with this goal in mind. We want you to be confident that your (ROI) Return On Investment goals are met and one way to do that is by asking your potential web vendor the right questions. Here are a few to consider…
- Does this proposal consider placing my site on multiple search engines like: Google, Yahoo, MSN (bing), AOL, Superpages.com and Ask.com?
- Will you show me the amount of impressions and clicks to my website?
- Can you help me understand where people are going on my website and why they are going there?
- Will you provide me the name, phone number and location of users that are calling me as a result of my internet marketing campaign?
- Will you record phone calls for me to listen to at my convenience to ensure I am receiving qualified leads?
- Will you be able to determine which keywords perform better for my company and work to ensure I am making the most of my investment?
- Will you be able to tell me which keywords are actually producing qualified leads?
- Will you help me better position my website to close more business?
Now here’s the reality of it all…Any smart vendor would answer ‘yes’ to these questions; but those with the capacity to perform will also provide samples of their work and successes. Now that is a vendor you can trust!
